Training course on CDC

Description of the training

A comprehensive Training course, designed to be a) embedded in Initial Teacher Training Programmes (under- and post-graduate), and b) a short Continuing Professional Development course aiming to train student teachers (preschool, primary and secondary) on teaching and developing the Competences for Democratic Culture, as defined by the Council of Europe.

Objectives of the training

The training aims to support student teachers and teachers in developing:

– an in-depth, critical understanding of the role of education and particularly of formal education in the development of children’s / young citizens’ political socialisation.

– an in-depth, critical understanding of current debates in the area of Education for democratic citizenship (EDC), Human Rights Education (HRE) and Intercultural Education (IE).

– a critical understanding of the view of education as a fundamental right and confidence in exploring the implications of this for educational practice.

– student teachers’ confidence in leading initiatives and developing educational programmes on the development of the Competences for Democratic Culture.

Intended Learning Outcomes of the Training

On completion of the training participants will be able to:

– support students in critically examining key concepts related to citizenship education, democratic culture intercultural dialogue 

– recognise diversity in its various forms, have a good understanding of the significance of conflict resolution in education, and offer appropriate support to students for the
development of relevant skills;

– experiment with existing methodologies related to education for democratic culture, integrate them into their practice and develop and test their own relevant teaching methods.

– support the development of a democratic whole school ethos that encourages democratic practices and dialogical learning.
